What's' in a domain name?

A domain name is your unique name on the Internet.
It allows your company, organization or family to establish an Internet presence using a name that suits your business, and is easily associated with your business.

When you have a domain name your visitors can find your web site quickly and easily.

For Example.

If your business name is Dalgety Farmers Pty Ltd you could register your domain as dalgetyfarmers.co.uk, or any other name you think would be easy for your visitors to find and remember.

If you registered your domain as dalgetyfarmers.co.uk, then your visitors only need to type in www.dalgetyfarmers.co.uk and they will find your web site.

Imagine how many web sites there are all over the world and just how hard it is for your clients to find you if your not using a domain name that is easily associated with your business name.

If you do not have a domain name and have your site hosted by an ISP (internet service provider) or some other hosting company then the address used to find your site usually contains part of their address.

For Example.

If you're hosted by BT Internet and their web site is located at www.btinternet.co.uk then you would end up with..

Or you might have a virtual domain and you would end up with http://dalgetyfarmers.btinternet.co.uk

Obviously its smart business to make it as easy as possible for your clients to find you, and the way to do that is to register a domain name and make finding your site as easy as possible.

What is a Domain Name Suffix?
Domain names are composed of two parts, the descriptive name as in dalgetyfarmers and the domain suffix as is .co.uk, or .com for example.

The domain suffix usually relates to your countries designated domain suffix, although you do not have to use the domain suffix assigned for your country.

It is preferable to use your countries domain suffix however, usually someone living in the United Kingdom knows that a local company would most likely be using a domain suffix of the United Kingdom.

Below is a list of some possible domain name suffix and what country they are associated with.

.co.uk (United Kingdom) .com (United States) .com.au (Australia)

There are many other domain name suffix being used world wide, you may have seen .tv or .org, these can relate to any number of things, usually a non profit organisation will use the .org suffix.

Why should I register a domain name now?

Each domain name in the world must be unique - only one company can register and utilize yourbrand.com. However, there are very few restrictions on domain names - anyone may register just about any domain name they wish. As a result, more than 60,000 .com, .net and .org domain names are registered every day, effectively removing these domains from circulation.

There is a strong possibility that if you do not register your domain name, another company or individual will!
